Strengthening biosafety & biosecurity in Central Asia (P53)

Rotavirus vaccination

Rotavirus disease can cause gastrointestinal infections (inflammation of the stomach and intestines). Young children under 2 are particularly vulnerable to rotavirus. A vaccine is available. It is not an injection, but an oral vaccine.

Research on behavioural rules and well-being: round 21

The last survey round in this study (at least for the time being) was conducted just after the summer holidays, from 7–11 September 2022. The pressure on hospitals is currently lower than six months ago, but sewage surveillance figures show that there are still fairly high levels of the virus in circulation. To counter another surge of the coronavirus this autumn, the sectors have drawn up sector-specific plans. A number of behavioural recommendations to limit the spread of coronavirus are also still in effect, such as washing hands and testing in response to symptoms. Moreover, anyone aged 12 years and older will be able to get a repeat vaccination this autumn.

Research on behavioural rules and well-being: round 20

Since the last survey round (9-13 March 2022), all coronavirus measures have been discontinued. During the current survey round (8-12 June 2022), some behavioural recommendations still applied to limit the further spread of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, such as hygiene recommendations and testing and staying at home in the event of symptoms. Compared to the previous survey round, there are now far fewer people in hospital because of the coronavirus, and people are now advised to self-test with symptoms rather than getting tested by the Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs).

Dr. S. (Susana) Fuentes

Susana Fuentes (1976) is an expert in the human microbiome field. Since her appointment at the RIVM in 2016, her focus has been on translating fundamental microbiome research into applications for public health, combining the use of mechanistic models and human clinical studies to understand these complex interactions.

Jørgen de Jonge, PhD

Jørgen de Jonge (1975) is head of the department Immune mechanisms – Immunological Models (IIM) within the Center for Immunology of Infectious diseases and Vaccines (IIV) and an expert in viral immunology in preclinical models.

Dr. P. B. (Puck) van Kasteren

Puck van Kasteren (1985) is a virologist at the Center for Immunology of Infectious Diseases and Vaccines (IIV) where she investigates the immunological mechanisms underlying protection from respiratory viruses such as RSV, SARS-CoV-2, and influenza. Her research focuses on i) Fc-mediated antibody effector functions and ii) virus-host interaction at the respiratory epithelium. For this work, she makes use of both in vitro infection models and material from various clinical studies. (Nederlandse versie)

Dr. Jelle (J.) de Wit

Jelle de Wit (1983) is head of the department Immune mechanisms – Correlates of protection (IMC) within the Center for Immunology of Infectious diseases and Vaccines (IIV). Within the department IMC, we aim to gain insight in the immune mechanisms that protect us against human pathogens. The research is focused on characterizing cellular immune responses in detail, both the innate arm (Elena Pinelli), as well as the adaptive arm (Cecile van Els, Patricia Kaaijk and Josine van Beek). In various research projects we aim to obtain biomarkers or immune profiles that correlate to protection against disease.
