The Public Health Monitor Adults and Elderly provides information on the health, wellbeing and lifestyle of Dutch residents aged 18 years or older. The Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs), GGD GHOR Netherlands, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and Statistics Netherlands (CBS) collaborate to conduct this research. Normally, data is collected once every 4 years.
CBS selects a sample of Dutch residents aged 18 and older. Participants in the sample receive a letter inviting them to complete the questionnaire digitally or on paper. The results of the research help develop policies to improve the health of Dutch adults and the elderly.
All GGDs collect data in the same way. In addition to the standard questions, GGDs also ask questions about topics of local importance. These results are generally accessible through the GGD websites.
The latest results come from the Public Health Monitor Adults and Elderly 2024. In the autumn of 2024, over 454,000 people aged 18 and older participated in this research. Nearly 8,000 (1.7%) of these participants completed the CBS Health Survey. The questionnaire was not entirely the same for adults and elderly. Elderly (aged 65 and older) were asked about additional topics. Results are available at national, regional and municipal level for all GGDs. Previous data collections took place in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2022 (extra measurement due to the COVID-19 crisis).
Collaboration with CBS
The Public Health Monitor Adults and Elderly works together with the CBS Health Survey. The questionnaires of these two studies are coordinated. This allows data from the Public Health Monitor Adults and Elderly and the Health Survey to be combined for some of the topics.
