Clearer overview of the severity of respiratory infections

RIVM recently started receiving weekly data on the number of people admitted to ICU due to a respiratory infection. This is a significant expansion of surveillance for respiratory infections in the Netherlands. It offers a clearer overview of respiratory infections that result in severe illness.

Sixty percent of participants complete the CLI lifestyle programme; more tailored approach needed to reduce dropout rate

Of all people who start the Combined Lifestyle Intervention (CLI), approximately 60% complete the full programme. This is the outcome of an in-depth study by RIVM. The CLI is a lifestyle programme that takes two years to complete.

Mental health decreasing among young people, stable among adults

The mental health of young people in the Netherlands has declined. These findings are from by the latest quarterly research update (June 2025) from the GOR Network. More young people felt lonely, experienced stress, and had serious thoughts about suicide.

Next milestone in universal PFAS restriction process completed

Final revision of background document for universal PFAS restriction is now completed. Authorities from five countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and Sweden) have taken into account the feedback of more than 5 600 comments from stakeholders.

COVID-19 vaccination: invitations being sent to risk groups 2025

From 26 August 2025 on, the first people will receive an invitation for COVID-19 vaccination. RIVM will send the invitations till mid-October to people aged 60 years and older. The COVID-19 vaccination will be given from 15 September to 5 December 2025 at vaccination centres operated by the Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs) throughout the Netherlands.

Protection against RSV for babies from September 2025

Starting in September 2025, babies can get an injection against RSV. The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can cause serious respiratory infections, especially in young babies. Between 1,500 and 3,000 babies end up in hospital every year as a result of RSV. The injection protects babies against severe illness resulting from the virus during their first year of life.

Heatwave Plan no longer active from 15 August end of the day

From Friday 15 August 2025 at the end of the day the National Heatwave Plan will no longer be active in the whole country. The heatwave plan was already no longer active in the northern provinces from Thursday 14 August.

Chance of smog from ozone on Tuesday

On Tuesday, August 14, the air quality in parts of the provinces Utrecht, North Brabant, Gelderland, and Limburg, will be poor due to smog from ozone. This may cause discomfort for people who are sensitive to smog. RIVM advises them to stay indoors and limit strenuous physical activity. This advice is most relevant in the late afternoon and early evening, when the air will be most polluted.

Heatwave Plan no longer active in northern provinces from 14 August at 18:00 pm

From Thursday 14 August 2025 at 18:00 pm the National Heatwave Plan will no longer be active in the provinces Noord-Holland, Flevoland, Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe. The heatwave plan will remain active in the other provinces. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) and RIVM will continue to monitor the situation.

Chance of smog from ozone next Tuesday and Wednesday

On Tuesday, August 12, and Wednesday, August 13, the air quality in different parts of the Netherlands will be poor due to smog from ozone. On Tuesday, August 12, the air quality in the province of North-Brabant and central parts of the Netherlands possibly will be poor. On Wednesday, August 13, the air quality will be poor in de northern provinces of the Netherlands.
