Experts and expertise

Our position as a nationally and internationally respected research institute, is based on the quality of our work and the passion and commitment of our staff. Scientific research is fundamental to all work at RIVM, and cooperation with other scientific organisations is essential. An overview of RIVM experts and their expertise, including professorships and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Biogas

Biogas is a renewable resource of energy. Biogas production and use implies reduced CO2-emissions, re-use of organic resources and a reduction of the amounts of waste materials. The waste of the biogas production, known as digestate, may contain contaminants, which may threaten soil quality when the digestate is used as fertilizer. RIVM contributes to a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental benefits and risks of biogas production.

Organisation

RIVM has specialised knowledge centres, ranging across four domains of specific knowledge and expertise. The Executive Office supports all RIVM personnel in the performance of their duties, while the Information Services unit provides support in the fields of ICT and information provision, research methods and data. The institute is managed by a board of directors.

Centre for Health Protection

The centre focuses on the health impacts and risks to people of chemical and biological agents, with special attention to medicines, medical products, tobacco, consumer products, diet and food components, and interaction with life style factors.

Centre for Infectious Diseases Research, Diagnostics and Laboratory Surveillance (IDS)

The Centre for Infectious Diseases Research, Diagnostics and Laboratory Surveillance (IDS) is one of the five departments within the Centre for Infectious Disease Control of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). IDS is involved in laboratory surveillance, diagnostic testing, research and advice. As such, the centre plays an important role in the response to infectious diseases. IDS is an (inter)national reference laboratory for a number of pathogens. The centre also collaborates with other reference laboratories, both at home and abroad.
