Information materials heat

RIVM has developed information materials that professionals can use when they activate the local heatwave plans. These include animations, infographics and texts about the steps people can take to keep cool in hot weather.

Events

Many events and festivals are held during the summer period. Organisers and attendees should therefore be aware that very hot weather is possible. Below, RIVM shares a few general tips and things to keep in mind for a safe and healthy event in very hot weather.

Day care centres and schools

Children are vulnerable to heat because they do not always take steps to cool down when they are too hot. For that reason, it is important that caregivers help small children keep cool. This page contains tips and more information about symptoms.

Vulnerable groups

While many people enjoy hot weather, others may find it unpleasant or even get health problems as a result. For this reason, people who are unable to take good care of themselves need extra care and attention on hot days.

Scientific resources

There is a great deal of scientific information about heat and health. We have created a list of the most relevant information.

Health problems due to heat

People in vulnerable groups may get symptoms like feeling tired, a headache and having trouble concentrating. They are also at greater risk of more serious health problems, like dehydration and heat stroke. That is why it is important to look after each other. This page lists more symptoms that can be caused by heat.

Cooperation

RIVM uses the National Heatwave Plan to call attention to the potential health effects of heat, especially for vulnerable groups. RIVM collaborates with KNMI in the National Heatwave Plan and maintains close contacts with the Municipal Public Health Services.

How does the National Heatwave Plan work?

The National Heatwave Plan is a warning system managed by RIVM. RIVM alerts national healthcare organisations at various moments during the hot-weather season. This hot-weather season lasts from May until September. But when the National Heatwave Plan has been activated, the warning also applies to anyone who is involved in caring for vulnerable groups in any way. It is also a signal for them: be careful, look after each other.
