Global developments, such as conflicts, climate change, and pandemics, impact the health of the Dutch population both now and in the future. To be better prepared for these risks, RIVM assessed most important health risks to the Netherlands.
Key findings
Key risks for the next decade include antimicrobial resistance, climate change, misinformation, environmental pollution, declining trust in science and government, and lower willingness to vaccinate. These risks should be considered both separately and together.
RIVM looked in more detail to risks for the BES islands (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba), which are especially vulnerable to natural disasters and face healthcare staff shortages. Addressing these risks requires tailored approaches.
Policymakers are advised to strengthen cooperation between ministries, the (European Union), and global organizations, as tackling these threats often demands international collaboration.
