Purpose of green spaces in the city
How can we use green spaces and water as heat buffers in a changing climate? And how do green spaces (lawns, parks, green playgrounds) in an urban environment affect human health? Do they inspire people to get more exercise? Does it reduce stress and improve health? And where do health professionals rank green spaces in terms of importance for promoting human health? RIVMNational Institute for Public Health and the Environment researches the potential positive effects that green spaces can have on human health. RIVM is also a partner in the development of 70 Healthy School Courtyards.
RIVM strives to improve urban health and quality of life by addressing the role of soil, water and green spaces in relation to health and well-being in cities in the Netherlands and Europe. We are involved in Horizon2020 projects INHERIT and BlueHealth.
We monitor air quality and work on solutions to reduce air pollution, also on national and international level.
