SDG 11 Sustainable cities and communities

'Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable' (UN). RIVM works in various ways to make cities healthier and improve urban quality of life. We are also monitoring air quality and working on solutions to reduce air pollution. RIVM also addresses the role of water and green spaces in relation to health and well-being in growing urban areas in the Netherlands and Europe. In doing so, we contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 11.

SDG 17 Partnerships for the goals

'Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development' (UN). Many of the challenges in public health and the environment demand an international approach. Therefore, we actively seek collaboration abroad. Through collaboration with UN organisations including the WHO and within EU frameworks we contribute to achieving the SDGs worldwide.

SDG 6 Clean water and sanitation

'Ensure access to water and sanitation for all' (UN). RIVM develops and provides access to knowledge about water quality and health, such as the quality of drinking water and bathing waters, as well as protecting sources of potable water. This combination of knowledge makes RIVM a unique resource in the Netherlands and in Europe. We disseminate our knowledge far and wide, thus contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 6.

SDG 2 Zero hunger

'Safe, healthy and sustainable food for everyone' (UN). RIVM contributes to this goal with knowledge, research and practical tools. What we eat and how our food is produced has a major impact on public health and the environment. RIVM provides the facts and figures on current dietary habits in the Netherlands and their effects on safety, health and sustainability. RIVM also investigates and substantiates initiatives to improve the safety, health and sustainability of our food, taking it to a higher level.

NanoCRED

This is a framework for reliability and relevance evaluation of ecotoxicity data for nanomaterials. The nanoCRED evaluation criteria, and accompanying guidance, were developed to be used in combination with those developed through the ‘Criteria for Reporting and Evaluating Ecotoxicity Data (CRED)’ project. This approach can accommodate all types of nanomaterials, all types of aquatic ecotoxicity studies, and qualitative as well as quantitative data evaluation requirements. Furthermore, it is practically feasible to implement and directly applicable in European as well as international regulatory frameworks.

One box-model for accident situations in laboratories (Walser et al 2012)

Authors conclude that one measurement device is appropriate and sufficient for a screening assessment of workplace exposure to NP for events with NP concentrations orders of magnitude higher than the backgrond concentration and workplaces with good air mixing conditions.

The National Network of Safety and Security Analysts

The National Network of Safety and Security Analysts (ANV) is a knowledge network that, since 2011, conducts analysis in the framework of the National Safety and Security Strategy. It has been tasked to do so by the Ministry of Security and Justice on behalf of the National Steering Committee for National Safety and Security. The RIVM is both part of the core team and houses the secretariat of the Network.

Lean Business Canvas, safety and society check

This tool helps researchers to identify, develop and validate product and business ideas with the help of modern business tools such as the Lean Business Model Canvas. While formulating their business case, researchers perform a Safety and Society Check as part of the Lean Business Canvas, as applied within the NanoNextNL Valorisation Programme. Risk levels for safety and society are indicated with arrows based on expertise of business case owners and an independent expert; left for safety and right for society.

Societal incubator

This experimental tool is used to explore the sentiments/uncertainties of involved stakeholders and is under construction. The idea behind a societal incubator is how to connect safe and responsible use to innovation and engineering. Within NanoNextNL the idea of a societal incubator explores the benefits and applicability of an equivalent of a business incubator, combined with the value of open dialogues and participants eager to give shape to Safe-by-Design.
